The station is named after Snow Hill, the old name of the area in which it is based. The station is situated in the centre of Birmingham, with the Bullring and Birmingham Cathedral within walking distance.

The station was opened in 1852 on the Great Western Railway (GWR) main line from London Paddington to Wolverhampton and Birkenhead; it was initially named Birmingham Station.
